Bag No 1 Printing Issues

| October 12, 2011

So a funny thing happened while we were attempting to print the first issue of Bag… the printer rejected it. And not because we didn’t know about arcane concepts like DPI or bleed. No, it was rejected because the printer’s lawyer said we were attempting to “pass it off” as another publication. The printer suggested using a new image or shifting part of the image around. We decided just to remove the offending part entirely. Unfortunately that means we have to hand stamp the image onto 500 magazines. And by “we”, we mean the artist who the first issue of Bag is all about, Devitt Brown aka the dark. Above is a video of him stamping the very first issue.

Here’s the alt-weekly the printer thought we were trying to pass our magazine off as…

About Bag
You know how Rolling Stone or US Weekly will sometimes put out a special issue devoted entirely to the Jonas Brothers or Lady Gaga? Bag is basically like that except each issue is devoted entirely to one emerging Canadian artist. The first issue of Bag is a tabloid-sized newspaper about Vancouver artist Devitt Brown aka the dark. It’s 40-pages and it’s printed on the cheapest newsprint we could find. The “We” on the cover was stamped by hand because the printer feared he’d get sued (we like to think that this makes each copy unique). It comes in a cheap cellophane bag, it’s signed by the artist and is a numbered edition of 250. 250 unsigned and unnumbered copies of Bag will be given away for free in Vancouver via our mobile newspaper box. Its location will change every week, if not sooner. Bag launches in November 2011.
